Moscow, 7 September 2022 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov met Foreign Minister of Thailand, Don Pramudwinai in Moscow to discuss bilateral relations.

After the meeting of both ministers, the Russian Foreign Minister gave remarks and answered the media’s questions regarding the meeting. He affirmed that the relationship of both states relies on constructive cooperation, trust, and friendship.

Remarks of the Russian Foreign Minister

After the meeting, Lavrov told the media that the meeting was friendly, trustful, and traditional. Thailand and Russia share a long history of healthy bilateral relations. Both states will celebrate 125 years of diplomatic ties in the year 2022.

The Foreign Minister of Russia stated,

“Our relations rely on a firm foundation of friendship, constructive cooperation, and mutual trust. We are developing our relations on exactly this foundation. During the talks, we exchanged views on current bilateral issues. We will promote increased contact between different departments, business circles, and public organizations.”

During the meeting, both officials also focused on economic cooperation. The trade between both states grew by 30% to $2.28 billion in the year 2021.

The Russian Minister announced that to further strengthen the economic ties, both states will hold a regular meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation.

The Russian Foreign Minister further added that,

“We have a mutual understanding of the need to improve the contractual foundation of our relations, including the approval of documents ensuring reliable protection of the lawful rights of Russian citizens on the territory of Thailand. We supported the idea of increasing cultural, humanitarian, and youth exchanges.”

Relations between Russia and Thailand

“The Kingdom is one of Russia’s most important partners in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific Region.” said the Foreign Minister of Russia regarding Thailand during the press conference.

The bilateral relations between Russia and Thailand go back to the 19th century. The two nations exchanged delegacies in 1897 and 1898. In 1899 they agreed to a Treaty of Friendship and Maritime Navigation.

Following the Russian Revolution in 1917, diplomatic ties between the Soviet Union and Thailand were severed; however, they were reestablished in 1941. Russia has an embassy in Bangkok. Thailand has an embassy in Moscow. Thailand is one of the major tropical destinations for Russian tourists.
