Russian drones hit residential buildings in Ukraine

Kharkiv, 4 April 2024 (TDI): Russian drones hit residential buildings in Ukraine’s Kharkiv on Thursday. The strikes targeted residential buildings in a densely populated district, causing significant damage and disrupting power supplies.

Russian drones hit residential buildings in Ukraine’s Kharkiv, the second largest city, which killed at least four people and injured 12, officials in the border region have said. Two apartment buildings and private houses bore the brunt of the assault.

“Windows, all of the glass, everything was knocked out. There’s nothing left,” Zhanetta Kravchenko, a 77-year-old resident. “We are alive, at least, and I’m grateful for that.”

According to Ukrainian officials, the attack involved Shahed drones, Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles that Russia has increasingly deployed in the ongoing war. Tragically, three rescue workers responding to the initial strike were killed when the building they were attempting to secure was hit a second time.

Drones also hit the Zmiivska thermal power plant in the region, Synehubov said, keeping up pressure on an energy system that has come under repeated attack from air strikes in recent weeks.

Emergency crews are currently on the scene, battling fires, searching for survivors, and evacuating residents from damaged buildings. The attack also severed power lines, leaving over 350,000 residents without electricity.

One person was killed in a drone attack on another building. Ukraine’s General Staff said 11 of 20 drones were shot down. The Russian ministry said its air defenses shot down three drones over Belgorod, which borders Ukraine, as well as two drones over the Tula region.

Three rescue workers were killed overnight when Russia struck a multi-story building twice in quick succession in a “densely populated district of Kharkiv”, Igor Terekhov, the mayor of the eastern city, wrote on the Telegram app on Thursday.

Oleg Sinegubov, the regional governor in Kharkiv, said Russian attacks also hit the cities of Lozova and Chuhuiv. Russia’s Defense Ministry said Thursday it thwarted Ukrainian drone attacks targeting two regions in western Russia.
