Moscow, 5 April 2022 (TDI): A delegation of Foreign Ministers of the Arab League led by the organization’s Chief was in Russia to mediate between Russia and Ukraine. The war between the two has had far-reaching consequences for some Arab nations.

Foreign Ministers of Egypt, Algeria, Iraq, Jordan, Sudan; the members of the Arab Contact Group on Ukraine participated in the talks in Moscow with the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov alongside Arab League Secretary-General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

The Foreign Minister of UAE — the current Arab member of the UN Security Council — was also part of the meeting. The delegation will also hold a meeting with the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba in Poland, today.

The Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov gave the following opening remarks during the meeting of the League of Arab States’ Ministerial Contact Group on Ukraine.

Welcome to Moscow, friends.

You represent the League of Arab States and were elected to the Ministerial Contact Group on Ukraine.

We have discussed a number of bilateral issues and held separate meetings. We will continue these discussions after this meeting.

In addition to the materials that we regularly provide concerning the special military operation , we will update you on the most recent developments.

The situation is being leveraged to make injustice an inseparable part of international relations in order to thwart the creation of such relations in full accordance with the UN Charter. I will then take your questions.

I hope we will get a chance to discuss the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and north Africa that is caused by the aggressive policies of a number of countries, mostly NATO members.

They continue to destabilize the situation and hinder the sustainable development of the region for the benefit of the people of all countries.

I suggest that we begin to discuss these issues right away. We will have a discussion after the opening remarks and then hold a news conference.
