Romanian Envoy Presents First-Ever Choral Version of Pakistan’s National Anthem to Senate Chairman

Islamabad (TDI): In a landmark gesture of cultural diplomacy, Romania has presented the first-ever professional choral arrangement of Pakistan’s national anthem, the Qaumi Tarana, to Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani – the Senate chairman.

The official album and written choral score were created by the renowned National Chamber Choir Madrigal – Marin Constantin, with support from the Embassy of Romania in Islamabad.

The project marks a historic reinterpretation of Pakistan’s anthem, traditionally an orchestral composition, into a refined polyphonic choral work arranged for soprano, alto, tenor, and bass voices.

Originally composed in 1949 by Ahmed Ghulam Ali Chagla with lyrics by Hafeez Jalandhari, the Qaumi Tarana is a central symbol of Pakistan’s national identity, emphasizing unity, faith, and progress.

The new choral arrangement preserves the anthem’s solemnity while introducing a fresh musical dimension that blends Eastern melodic traditions with Western harmonic structures.

The initiative was formally launched around Pakistan Day celebrations in March 2026 and has been widely described as a “historic” cultural tribute. It forms part of the Madrigal Choir’s international program, “Diplomacy – The Anthems of the World,” which aims to promote global dialogue through music.

Romanian Ambassador Dan Stoenescu presented the album and score to key Pakistani leaders, including Chairman Gilani, highlighting the symbolic importance of the project.

During the meeting, both sides also held discussions on strengthening bilateral relations, focusing on parliamentary cooperation, economic engagement, and regional developments, including the evolving situation in the Middle East.

The Madrigal Choir, founded in 1963 and internationally recognized for its distinctive choral style, has long been regarded as a vehicle of Romania’s cultural diplomacy. The anthem project alone has reportedly reached millions of viewers through media and digital platforms, underlining its global resonance.

Officials described the presentation as more than a musical milestone. It represents a shared commitment to cultural exchange and mutual respect between Romania and Pakistan.

By reimagining a key national symbol through a universal artistic language, the initiative underscores how culture can serve as a powerful bridge between nations.
