Beijing, 30 December 2022 (TDI): The Chinese Ambassador to the United States (US), Qin Gang, has been named as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.

The news was shared on Friday by the state broadcaster, China Central Television (CCTV). Ambassador Qin Gang will be replacing Wang Yi. Previously, Qin had been serving as the Ambassador of China to the US since July 2021.

Hua Chunying, the Spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry shared the news, congratulating the new Foreign Minister on Twitter.

While Wang Yi was elected to the Chinese Communist Party’s politburo in October. He is anticipated to take on more responsibility for the foreign policy of the country.

It is pertinent to note that Wang Yi had been serving the country as Foreign Minister since 2013. Both were appointed in October to the Communist Party’s 205-member Central Committee, the body in charge of making national policy.

Formerly, Qin, who is a frontrunner in the Chinese Foreign Ministry, held a variety of positions. He also held a position at the Chinese Embassy in Britain and served as the Ministry’s Spokesperson.

As President Xi Jinping’s dependable aide, Qin also held the position of Chief Protocol Officer from 2014 to 2018.

After serving for 17 months as China’s 11th Ambassador to the US during the tensest relations between the two countries, he will now depart Washington and head back to Beijing to assume the responsibility of the Foreign Minister.
