Dushanbe, 9 June 2023 (TDI): On June 8, 2023, the Emir of Qatar arrived in Tajikistan for a state visit.

The Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, and President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, received the guest, the Emir of the State of Qatar,  Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Soft diplomacy of Tajikistan

On the sidelines of the diplomatic talks, Emomali Rahmon took the visitor for a tour of the lush green gardens of the country residence “Takob” in the Varzob district.

Both leaders had a friendly walk in this scenic and fresh atmosphere of Takob. This activity indicates not only the warm and welcoming nature of Tajik hospitality but also a major diplomatic move by Tajikistan to promote its soft image and tourism.

The Emir of the State of Qatar attended the opening ceremony of the Central Cathedral Mosque of the city of Dushanbe. Qatar funded the construction of this mosque as a gift for the people of Tajikistan from Emir.

While exploring the magnificent mosque Sheikh Tamim was impressed by the unique architecture of Tajikistan.

Strengthening bilateral cooperation

The two leaders discussed the means to enhance bilateral engagements in trade and economic relations. Tajik’s leader also considered the scope of future Qatari investments in Tajikistan.

They signed different agreements and memorandum of understanding(MOU) in different sectors. The purpose of these agreements is to foster the relationship between the two brotherly relations.

They also considered various strategies and methods to revive the working and implementation of previously sealed 20 agreements and memorandum of understanding.

A Glimpse of the Past

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were initiated after Tajikistan gained independence in 1991. Qatar was one of the few countries that provided Tajikistan with early formal recognition.

After the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries have been moving continuously toward constructive engagement. Their brotherly relations have been boosted by their collaboration in economic, religious, and social fields.

The ambassador of Tajikistan to Qatar, Khisrav Sohibzoda, expressed high hopes for this visit. This visit will further strengthen diplomatic relations and mutual collaboration between Doha and Dushanbe, he added.
