Qatar attends ECOSOC high-level session in Cairo, Egypt

Doha, 22 July 2022 (TDI): The State of Qatar participated in the Extraordinary Ministerial-Level Session of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) held on Thursday.

The session was held at the Secretariat General of the Arab League in Cairo, Egypt. Permanent representative of Qatar to the Arab League, Salem Mubarak Al Shafi, headed the delegation of Qatar at the meeting.


The high-level ministerial meeting occurred within the framework of the upcoming Arab Summit. During the meeting, delegations from various countries drafted and prepared the agenda for the Summit.

The agenda was prepared regarding the economic and social issues, including various important topics that represent a priority for joint Arab action.

The meeting also discussed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, highlighting “the need to reach a diplomatic solution” in the final statement.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, stated, “We must not let us forget the Arab crises that are not over.” Aboul Gheit added that conflict and crises persist in several Arab countries.

Further, the Secretary-General highlighted the crisis in Yemen and Libya. In addition, he also divided Arab states over the issue of the return of Syria to the Arab League.

Arab League Summit 2022

The Arab League will hold its first annual summit, after 3 years, in Algeria in November. Moreover, the bloc said on Thursday that this would be the first in-person meeting after a long pause due to the pandemic forcing the suspension of meetings.

The Summit is of two-day duration. It is usually held in March. This year’s Arab League Summit was originally scheduled to occur in July. However, it will now be held in November. The Summit will start on 1st November 2022.

In March 2019, the last session of the Arab League took place in Tunis, Tunisia.
