Presidents Xi and Zelenskyy Discuss Key Issues in Recent Phone Call

Beijing, 26 April 2023 (TDI): Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke with his Ukrainian counterpart President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

 

In a readout, China’s Foreign Ministry quoted President Xi as acknowledging that China-Ukraine relations have evolved into a strategic partnership over the past 31 years and have greatly contributed to the development and revitalization of both countries.

He praised President Zelenskyy for emphasizing the importance of bilateral relations and cooperation with China and expressed gratitude for Ukraine’s support in evacuating Chinese citizens last year.

President Xi emphasized that mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity is the foundation of their relationship and urged both sides to continue their tradition of mutual respect and sincerity to advance the strategic partnership further.

China is committed to developing relations with Ukraine and will work towards mutually beneficial cooperation despite the changing international situation.

President Xi also acknowledged the complexity of the evolving Ukraine crisis and reiterated China’s stance on peace to facilitate talks and support a political settlement. He proposed four points that need to be done and four things that the international community must do together to achieve peace.

China has released its Position on the Political Settlement of the Ukraine Crisis. Although it did not create or participate in the crisis, it will not sit idly by or exploit the situation for its own benefit.

Dialogue and negotiation are the only way to move forward towards lasting peace and security. China will continue to facilitate talks for peace and provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

President Zelenskyy congratulated President Xi on his re-election and praised China’s achievements. He expressed his commitment to the one-China policy and desire to advance bilateral cooperation with China.

President of Ukraine welcomed China’s role in restoring peace and seeking a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine crisis and thanked China for its humanitarian assistance. Both leaders are hopeful that through dialogue and cooperation, lasting peace and security can be achieved for the benefit of both countries and the world.
