Islamabad, 4 March 2024 (TDI): Shehbaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, received a congrats telegram from the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, on March 3.

The message reads, “I would like to sincerely congratulate you on being elected to the position of Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan”.

The statement also highlighted President Rahmon’s wish for Prime Minister-elect Shehbaz Sharif to achieve numerous successes in implementing plans for Pakistan’s long-term social and economic growth.

This, he believed, would not only improve the lives of its citizens but also enhance Pakistan’s international standing.

Pakistan and Tajikistan share a long history of friendship, understanding, mutual respect, and trust. We are pleased that our nation’s diverse cooperation, which is founded on these dignified customs, is continuously growing and expanding to include new aspects.

Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon invited newly-elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to visit Tajikistan. He reiterated their ongoing interest in pursuing the interstate discussion and working with Prime Minister of Pakistan to effectively promote this process.

“I think that by working together even more, we can strengthen and broaden our nations’ lasting alliance for the good of our peoples”, President Rahmon emphasized.

Voting to elect Prime Minister

On March 3, the National Assembly, or lower house of parliament, met to vote on the Prime Minister. Legislators elected Shehbaz Sharif as the country’s 24th Prime Minister.

“Shehbaz Sharif has been declared as the Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan,” National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq announced.

The minimum number needed for victory was fixed at 169 votes, and the National Assembly had 336 members. Shahbaz Sharif won 201 votes, whilst opposing candidate Omar Ayub received 92.

Today, in his first speech to the National Assembly, the Prime Minister-elect highlighted his government’s priorities. He revealed plans and changes to solve difficulties in several sectors.

Shehbaz Sharif was elected Prime Minister for the second time. He was Prime Minister until August 2023. The National Assembly was dissolved to make room for a caretaker government entrusted with conducting national elections.
