Strasbourg, 10 March 2022 (TDI): President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola welcomed the Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas to the European Parliament.

In her speech, President Metsola spoke about the importance of Europe’s response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine being proportionate to the serious, real, and growing threat to collective security.

Roberta Metsola addressed the first This is Europe debate, along with Prime Minister Kaja Kallas. In her speech, President Metsola spoke about the importance of unprecedented coordination, solidarity, and unity against Russia.

President Roberta Metsola said, “We need to re-assess the European Union’s role in this new world. We need to boost our investment in defense and innovative technologies”.

“This is the time for us to take decisive steps to ensure the security of all Europeans. The time to build real security and Defence Union and reduce our dependencies on the Kremlin”, she added.

Moreover, the President of the European Parliament thanked the Prime Minister of Estonia for visiting the European Parliament.  She said, “We are so pleased to welcome you back among us, now as Prime Minister of Estonia, a Member State of the European Union that shares a nearly 300-kilometer border with Russia”.

“This is Europe” are debates where different EU leaders can be present to discuss our common agenda”. Since 2004, when Estonia became a member of the European Union, the country has demonstrated that it is an active and constructive partner.

The membership of the European Union is an invaluable factor in raising the political and economic profile of Estonia. The two leaders affirmed in the address that a strong and well-functioning EU that is politically influential as well as globally competitive is in Europe’s best interest.
