Lisbon, 12 October 2021 (TDI): Antonio Costa, the Portuguese Prime Minister met with Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the United States. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 67th session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Lisbon.
The Portuguese Prime Minister admired the leadership qualities of the Speaker of the American House. He appreciated her role in defending American values of democracy and freedom.

They discussed the bilateral relations between the two countries. They talked about the ways to expand the cooperation in the two states. The two countries share a partnership in NATO which strengthens their cooperation.
Antonio Costa highlighted the role of Portuguese descendants in American progress. He also highlighted the growing number of Portuguese descendants elected in the posts of Federal, State, and Local levels.
Global challenges were also discussed in their meeting. The two debated on the foreign policy priorities of the two countries and also emphasized Transatlantic relations. Transatlantic relations are very important for the security and prosperity of Portugal as the Atlantic provides strategic depth for Portugal.
Portugal and the United States enjoy close relations. The two countries established bilateral relations after Portugal recognized American independence in 1791. The membership of Portugal in NATO in 1949 further strengthened the bilateral relations of Portugal and America.
