A brief history of the Independence Day
Peru was colonized by the Spanish empire in the 15th century.
In the early 19th century, many other countries in Latin America were fighting for their independence.
In 1821, the Viceroy of Peru initiated a military campaign against Chile and its fight for independence. The movement gained little backing, nationally or internationally, and ended with Argentina and Chile signing a treaty to pursue the liberation of Peru.
Argentinian commander Jose San Martín entered Lima’s Plaza de Armas on July 28, 1821, and declared the independence of Peru.
The Act of Declaration of Independence of Peru was signed on 15 July 1821, a document that preceded the proclamation in a public act on 28 July.
Celebrations for the Independence Day
President Pedro Castillo, the corresponding heads of ministries, and other authorities will attend the celebration ceremony on 28 July at the Government Palace.
The members of the Executive Authority will go to the Cathedral Basilica for the traditional solemn mass.
Furthermore, the representatives of international organizations will greet the President in the Golden Hall of the Government Palace.
The celebration of the anniversary of Peru’s Independence Day will also continue on 29 July. According to this, the ceremony of Thanksgiving for Peru will take place at the Cathedral of Faith.
