Asuncion, 30 July 2022 (TDI): The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay held a ceremony to celebrate International Friendship Day on 30 July.

Members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to Paraguay and officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were in attendance.

Agenda of the Ceremony

The ceremony started with a speech by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay, Julio César Arriola.  

He said: “It was an honor to be part of the Permanent Mission that led the negotiations of the Resolution 65/275 in 2011. This Resolution approved by all States that make up the UN, which established 30 June as International Friendship Day.”

Furthermore, Foreign Minister added, “Paraguay is a strong advocate of respectful and tolerant dialogue that allows us to reach mutual understanding. Our country leaves behind all prejudices and polarization that could threaten world peace.”

“And, I cannot forget to mention great lessons of the pandemic is the importance of strengthening relations between countries.”, Julio César Arriola stressed.

Moreover, Arriola said he was confident that this day would continue to inspire people to move towards peace and non-violence.

At the end of the ceremony, anthropologist José Zanardini presented an Act. 

He said, “It is an honor and joy for me to share with you this Act. This document contains precious indications for the revival of a worldwide desire for brotherhood. We need a community that supports us, that helps us, and in which we help each other to look forward.” 

International Friendship Day

First-time World Friendship Crusade, the international civil organization, proposed the concept of International Friendship Day in 1958. Its founder, Ramon Artemio Bracho from Puerto Pinasco, Paraguay, came up with the idea for International Friendship Day.

Later in 2011, UN General Assembly proclaimed the International Day of Friendship. 

The day aims with the idea of friendship between peoples, countries, cultures, and individuals. The Resolution emphasizes involving young people, as future leaders, in community activities.

UN encourages governments and international organizations to hold events and activities contributing to the international community’s efforts.
