The Foreign Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin, meets with and Foreign Minister Wang Yi

Dushanbe, 1 August 2022 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sirojiddin Muhriddin met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Yi. 

Agenda of the Meeting

During the meeting, both sides discussed a wide range of bilateral cooperation and regional security issues.

In addition, they also discussed the implementation of the agreements that were reached during a meeting between the leaders of the two countries on the sidelines of the Winter Olympic Games in February.

Furthermore, the two Ministers exchanged views regarding topical regional and international issues.

Together with cooperation within the framework of international and regional organizations. Particularly, the UN, and the SCO, as well as within the framework of the “Central Asia + China format”.

During the meeting, it was agreed that the parties will continue to strengthen their cooperation. Especially in the political, economic and investment, transport, agricultural and health sectors, and in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

At the end of the meeting, the Cooperation Program between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China for 2023-2024 was signed.

Furthermore, the two Foreign Ministers also participated in the opening ceremony of the Tajikistan and China Center of experience and professional education and training of specialists- the workshop “Liu Bang”. 

Furthermore, they attended the ceremony of the official allocation by the Chinese side of 5 million doses of vaccines against Covid-19.

Tajikistan-China Relations

China and Tajikistan established formal diplomatic relations in 1992. Both countries have maintained regular high-level contacts. As well as cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic ties after the settlement of their border issues.

China and Tajikistan have been comprehensive strategic partners since 2018. More to this, Tajikistan was one of the first countries to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China.

Specifically on the Silk Road Economic Belt. Also, China is Tajikistan’s largest source of foreign investment.

Most importantly, Tajikistan offers a quicker route for imports of natural resources. Especially from countries like Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan in the west.
