Ramallah, 11 May 2024 (TDI): The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed the sweeping vote and international consensus on the eligibility of the State of Palestine to full membership in the UNGA.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of the State of Palestine appreciated the sweeping United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) vote.
The vote has been cast for the resolution affirming the eligibility of the State of Palestine to obtain full membership and granting it additional rights and privileges in the United Nations and its various institutions and arms.
The Palestinian Ministry confirmed that the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) today, Friday, May 10, 2024, adopted the said resolution.
Resultantly, 143 countries have voted in favor of the resolution, compared to 9 countries which opposed while, 25 countries abstained from voting.
It further indicated that this decision confirms that Palestine fulfills all the conditions contained in the United Nations Charter, especially Article Four.
Thus, it qualifies to obtain full membership in the United Nations as a sovereign and independent state.
Right of self-determination
The Palestinian Ministry stressed that today’s vote is a clear message and confirmation from the international community of the natural, legal, and historical right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.
Furthermore, it also signifies their aspirations towards liberation, independence, and living on their land in security and peace like the people of the rest of the world.
The Ministry indicated that this step comes within the efforts aimed at protecting and preserving the Two-State solution.
This solution, it further explains, is based on ending the colonial occupation, the Israeli apartheid system and achieving peace and stability in the region.
The Ministry believes that despite the historical injustice that has befallen the Palestinian people since the Nakba in 1947 until now, the worst is evident today.
This encompasses the crime of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Israeli killing machine in the Gaza Strip for more than 217 days now.
The Foreign Ministry stressed that strengthening Palestine’s position in the United Nations is an enhancement of peace.

Essentially, it believes this recognition is a solution based on multilateral diplomacy and international law endorsing inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
In this context, the Ministry expressed its thanks to the countries that sponsored and voted in favour of the resolution.
More importantly, it has renewed its call to countries supporting Two-State solution, regional stability and necessity of bilateral recognition of Palestinian State.
