History of the Republic Day

Ataturk’s arrival in the Black Sea port city of Samsun in 1919 marked the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence.

When Anatolia was freed from occupation, a new period in Turkish history began with the Treaty of Lausanne’s 1923 recognition of the newly formed nation.

Ataturk formally announced the state’s name and status as a republic on October 29, 1923.

Ataturk was subsequently chosen as the first president of the Republic of Turkey by a voice decision in the Grand National Assembly.

Since that time, Turkey has observed Republic Day on October 29 annually.
