Pakistan urges UN to address cases of Missing Persons in IIOJK

New York, June 13, 2024 (TDI): Pakistan has expressed its disappointment at the lack of response from the United Nations regarding the specific complaint of thousands of people missing in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

While speaking at an Arria Formula meeting on missing persons in armed conflict at the UN headquarters, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, the Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, stated this:

“We have had no response from any institution or personality on this specific complaint of thousands of people ‘missing’ in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir,” Ambassador Jadoon told the meeting.

Moreover, he highlighted the urgent need to address specific cases. Notably, the cases include the abduction and disappearance of 13,000 young Kashmiri boys by occupying forces in Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IOJK).

The Pakistan deputy UN envoy said that the cases of missing persons in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) have led to the tragic phenomenon of “half widows”. It refers to Kashmiri women who are uncertain about the fate of their husbands, sons, and brothers.

Additionally, he said these women are denied the basic right to know if their loved ones are alive or dead. These women are deprived of the opportunity to bury and mourn their loved ones.

However, Pakistan called on the United Nations to focus its efforts on addressing these specific cases rather than engaging in broad thematic discussions on missing persons, which have not yielded productive outcomes.

“Pakistan believes that the most effective response to the issue of missing persons in armed conflict is the strict application of international law and a process of accountability”.

Ambassador Jadoon concluded his statement with a call to action for the United Nations, Human Rights Council, and other relevant bodies to address cases of missing persons in armed conflicts effectively.
