Pakistan to Play Key Role in Global Security: Dar

ISLAMABAD, (TDI): Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, affirmed that the country will continue to play its role in fostering global security and peace.

Addressing Pakistan’s envoys at key multilateral and bilateral missions in Islamabad, he emphasized that Pakistan’s non-permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is an honor and expressed gratitude to the member states of the United Nations for their support.

Ishaq Dar underscored Pakistan’s commitment to upholding the UN Charter, noting the serious human rights situation in Gaza and reiterating that the Kashmir issue should be resolved in accordance with UN resolutions.

He acknowledged the many challenges facing the world, stating that humanity is standing on the brink of multiple crises, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s position as a responsible nation. Dar emphasized that Pakistan will play a proactive role in the UNSC, contributing to resolving the critical issues on the Council’s agenda.

Furthermore, Dar outlined his vision for a dynamic foreign policy in both bilateral and multilateral dimensions. The envoys present shared their assessments and perspectives on regional and global developments and offered input for shaping Pakistan’s foreign policy priorities for 2025 and beyond.

The meeting was also attended by Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch, along with Additional Foreign Secretaries and senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Today marks the beginning of Pakistan’s two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Pakistan replaces Japan and begins its eighth tenure on the Council.

Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the United Nations, stated that the country will play an “active and constructive role” in addressing global challenges.

In June, Pakistan was elected to the UNSC for this term, securing 182 votes out of 185 total ballots cast.

The country exceeded the required two-thirds majority (124 votes). During the election, five countries abstained, and three voted against Pakistan.

Pakistan was supported by 52 members of the UN’s Asian group and has previously served on the Council in 2012-13, 2003-04, 1993-94, 1983-84, 1976-77, 1968-69, and 1952-53.
