Islamabad, 3 August 2022 (TDI): Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan re-affirmed its ‘One-China’ Policy amid the recent visit of US House of Representatives Speaker, Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

Pakistan is strongly committed to its Policy and supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China. It is concerned about the evolving situation in Taiwan.

Moreover, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan in a press release stated that the World is dealing with a security crisis due to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which impacts food and energy security globally.

The World cannot afford another crisis that has negative implications for international security, peace, and the economy, according to Foreign Ministry.

Furthermore, Pakistan believes that relations between states must be based on mutual respect, non-interference in internal affairs as well as peaceful resolution of issues according to principles of international law, the UN charter, and bilateral agreements.

One China Policy

On 27, October 1971, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) passed  UN resolution 2758 which states that the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government in China.

Pakistan and One-China Policy

In 2007, on a visit by the Foreign Minister of China, Wang Yi, Pakistan reiterated its Policy. The Pakistani Government stated Taiwan is an inalienable and integral part of the People’s Republic of China, which is the sole government and represents the whole of China including Taiwan.

Earlier, in February 2022, Imran Khan, Former Prime Minister of Pakistan re-affirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to the One China Policy during a session with the heads and representatives of Chinese Think Tanks in Beijing.

Pak-China Relations

Pakistan and China maintain close diplomatic relations since 1951. They have signed several agreements on mutual cooperation in the areas of education, culture, Tourism, Information Technology, etc.

In 2005, the parties also signed the ‘Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Good Neighborly Relations. Most importantly, China launched ‘China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) in 2013 which aims to promote regional connectivity and enhance bilateral trade.
