Sydney, 9 November 2022 (TDI): Pakistan qualified for the T20 finals after beating New Zealand in the semi-final, held at the Sydney Cricket Ground. This was the first semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, played between Pakistan and New Zealand.

Pakistan was handed a lifeline after the Netherlands beat South Africa in the first game of the triple-header. Pakistan has qualified for the finals after 30 years.

In 1992, Pakistan won the ICC World Cup for the first time after beating England by 22 runs in the finals. The next semi-final will be played between India and England on 10 November 2022.

The team who would win the second semi-final would be up against Pakistan for the final match of the tournament, which will take place on 13 November at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

ICC (International Cricket Council) Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 is the eighth tournament of the format, played in Australia from 16 October-13 November 2022. The same tournament was to be held previously in 2020 but due to Covid-19, the event was postponed until now.

Match Highlights

A rejuvenated Pakistani team lifted the game when it mattered the most. They stormed into the finals with a convincing victory with a 7-wicket win over New Zealand.

The match started at 1 PM on Pakistan’s Standard Time (PKT) in Sydney. New Zealand (NZ) won the toss and elected to bat first. This led to a 152 runs total in the first innings by New Zealand. Pakistani team had to chase and win the match by scoring 153 runs.

Pakistan won the match by 7 wickets. The opening batters Babar Azam and Muhammad Rizwan scored individual half-centuries and led to the team’s contended victory with 105 run opening partnership.

This has provided the base for the match ahead. Although the match entered the final over, still the team managed to gain a swift win and progressed into the finals.
