Islamabad, 10 September 2021 (TDI): In an interview with CNN, the National Security Advisor (NSA) of Pakistan, Dr. Moeed Yousaf, stated that Pakistan only prioritizes peace and stability in Afghanistan. Pakistan will continue to work for this purpose but under international legal frameworks. Pakistan still holds 4 million Afghan refugees today and 25000 people cross the border daily.

He urged the international community to think out of the controversies and help the Afghan people who are facing a humanitarian crisis there. He reiterated that the world should not leave Afghanistan alone in this difficult time and repeat the mistake of the 1990s. He further added that Pakistan, because of its geographical proximity, bears the brunt of what comes out of Afghanistan. Therefore, Pakistan has a right to defend its national security and it is committed to secure its borders to prevent terrorists from entering the country.

Pakistan is working to make sure that it is not destabilized by any other actor in the region. Yousaf stated that Pakistan has nothing to do with the government in Afghanistan. It is a sovereign government and that’s a new reality.
