Pakistan, Maldives to Form JWGs on Tourism, Trade

Islamabad (TDI): High Commissioner of Maldives to Pakistan His Excellency Muhammad Thoha called on Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema on Wednesday.

During the meeting, Ahad Cheema proposed the creation of sector-specific Joint Working Groups (JWGs) on Tourism, Trade, Labour, Investment & Aviation under the framework of the Pakistan-Maldives Joint Commission.

The High Commissioner welcomed the proposal and assured that his country would soon send an official delegation to work out the details of these Working Groups.

The two officials also agreed on holding the Inaugural Session of the Pakistan-Maldives Joint Commission in early 2025.

The Minister informed that Pakistan is keen to explore new avenues for cooperation with Maldives in key priority areas.

He welcomed the Maldivian side to explore the industries of Halal meat, Agricultural Products, Fruits and Surgical Instruments in Pakistan.

On the occasion, the Maldives High Commissioner to Pakistan emphasized the physical proximity between Karachi and Maldivian Port. He assured that he would raise the matter of bilateral trade between both countries with his government.

To this, Minister Ahad Cheema thanked the High Commissioner. He noted that both countries could play an important role in regional and international forums (SAARC, OIC) on significant issues such as stronger climate action.

Both sides also agreed to continue their efforts in enhancing bilateral ties.
