Pakistan forms task force to boost road trade with Azerbaijan

Islamabad, 18 July 2023 (TDI): A meeting was held between the Federal Minister for Communications, Maulana Asad Mahmood, and a seven-member delegation from Azerbaijan to discuss a road trade agreement.

The Minister for Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan, Rashad Nabiyev led the delegation. The objective of the meeting was to establish a legal framework for trade and enhance bilateral ties.

Both countries discussed issues of cooperation between the countries in the transport sector, including aviation, railway and transit transport.

Moreoever, the leaders exchanged views on the possibilities of transporting Pakistani goods through Azerbaijan.

Maulana Asad Mahmood thanked the Azerbaijani team for coming to Pakistan and for meetings to communicate with various ministries and officials.

Pakistan wants to improve land connections with Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Eastern Europe to help the economies and improve the lives of the people, he added.

The government of Pakistan is ready to provide any assistance needed for road transport and trade. In the meeting, he announced that the Federal Secretary Communications & Chairman NHA Captain (Rtd.) Muhammad Khurram Agha will be the focal person for this taks force.

Furthermore, Rashad Nabiyev expressed his gratitude for making efforts to boost bilateral trade. He said Azerbaijan has created new roadways for the promotion of trade and mass transportation. It has also built a network of highways connecting up to Bandar Abbas, Iran to increase trade with Iran.

Previously, On September 15, 2022, the Ministry of Commerce discussed the Transit Trade Agreement document with Azerbaijan after receiving consent from all parties. Every type of transportation is covered by the agreement, including land, rail, air, and sea. To further facilitate trade, the mechanisms and lists for tariff reduction were also discussed.
