Pakistan Calls for Stronger UN Police Role in Peacekeeping

United Nations (TDI): Describing United Nations Police as a cornerstone of global peacekeeping, Pakistan has called for the inclusion of its perspectives in UN’s flagship activity that helps nations in conflict transition to peace.

“Their (UN Police) insights make an important difference in improving peacekeeping operations,” Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to the UN, told United Nations Security Council which met to discuss UN support to conflict-hit countries.

“It is essential that perspectives of the UN Police be included in decision-making on peacekeeping missions, including mission planning and resourcing.”

Ambassador Akram also highlighted the need for realistic mandates to ensure the success of peacekeeping operations.

“In the situations, where a quick deployment of Formed Police Units, instead of military, is required, the deployment should be based on clear and achievable mandates and backed by adequate resources,” he said.

He added that policing in peacekeeping operations requires to evolve in a way that is capable of addressing complex, non-traditional threats involving human trafficking, organized crime, terrorism and weaponization of technology.
