Pakistan, Iran Step Up Agricultural Ties with New Trade and Research Initiatives

Tehran (TDI): Pakistan and Iran have agreed to expand cooperation in the agricultural sector, with a focus on trade facilitation and joint research, in a meeting between Pakistan’s Minister for Commerce and Iran’s Minister for Agriculture.

During the meeting, both ministers reaffirmed their resolve to deepen collaboration in the agricultural domain and streamline the import and export of key commodities.

The renewed commitment follows last month’s visit by Pakistan’s Minister for National Food Security, which laid the groundwork for several trade and research agreements.

This meeting took place as both countries wrapped up the 22nd session of their Joint Economic Commission (JEC) in Tehran this week, adopting a wide-ranging protocol to deepen cooperation in trade, energy, infrastructure, health, and culture.

As a major development, the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture will send a high-level delegation to Pakistan within the next two weeks.

The purpose of the visit is to finalize the technical and logistical arrangements for the import of Pakistani corn, a move that is expected to open new markets for Pakistani farmers while addressing Iran’s agricultural needs.

Minister Jam Kamal Khan expressed appreciation for Iran’s recent steps to enhance imports of Pakistani rice and meat, which are two of Pakistan’s key export commodities. These measures, he noted, are crucial for building mutual economic resilience and fostering regional food security.

Beyond trade, both countries are now looking to collaborate on agricultural innovation. Iran has shown strong interest in partnering with Pakistan to conduct joint research on seed development, with an emphasis on creating disease-resistant crop varieties.

The two sides acknowledged the strategic importance of agriculture in their national economies and agreed that cooperation in this field will serve as a cornerstone for broader economic engagement.

Analysts see this growing partnership as a timely development, particularly as both nations seek to diversify their agricultural sectors and reduce dependency on external markets.
