The Secretary General of the UN, Antonio Guterres, opened the ministerial meeting.

The three-day high-level segment was held under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The theme of this year’s meeting is “Building back better from the coronavirus disease while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

On the sidelines of the forum, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Diplomatic Affairs also met the President of the 76th Session of the General Assembly, Dr. Abdullah Shahid, in his office in New York.

The two dignitaries exchanged words of appreciation. Al Harthy expressed Oman’s commitment to strengthen the cooperation with the Presidency of the General Assembly and the United Nations. Further, the Minister also affirmed his country’s commitment to increasing security in various parts of the world.

High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development

In 2012, the Forum on Sustainable Development was mandated by the outcome document of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20) “The Future We Want.” The first Forum meeting was held in September 2013.

The Forum meets annually under the auspices of the ECOSOC for eight days, including a three-day ministerial segment. It is the main UN platform for sustainable development. It follows up and reviews the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This year’s conference reviewed five SDGs in-depth. These include goals: 4 on quality education, 5 on gender equality, 14 on life below water, 15 on life on land, and 17 on partnerships for goals.

The Forum adopts intergovernmental negotiated political declarations.
