Officials of Germany and Uruguay hold meeting

Berlin, 9 September 2022 (TDI): The Foreign Minister of Uruguay, Francisco Carlos Bustillo interacted with a number of officials in Germany. Foreign Minister Bustillo took a part in an event organized by Hamburg in the capital of Germany, Berlin.


On that very occasion, the Uruguayan foreign minister met with the Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz. He also greeted the authorities of Hamburg and expressed a positive position toward strengthening relations between the two sides.

Meeting with German Foreign Minister

The Foreign Minister of Uruguay, Francisco Carlos Bustillo met the foreign minister of Germany, Annalena Baerbock on 8 September 2022.

The meeting between Baerbock and Bustillo focused on important developments between Latin America and the European states.


The meeting focused on the major developments regarding the Southern Common Market MERCOSUR and the European Union agreement. The discussion focused on the developments regarding difficulties in the agreement between the two blocs and the possible solutions.


The agreement between MERCOSUR and the EU was focused on the visits of FM Bustillo to Madrid, Brussels, and Paris while meeting with officials from the EU, France, and Spain.

The meeting with the German Foreign Minister also focused on increasing economic cooperation between the two trade blocs. The new investment and commercial areas were also given priority by the foreign ministers of Uruguay and Germany.

There was also a focus on bilateral cooperation regarding sustainable development goals. The officials also discussed the potential supplying position of green hydrogen in Uruguay. The investments of Uruguay in the sector of renewable energies were also recognized.


Minister Baerbock expressed interest in deepening the Uruguayan experience with cannabis, as well as in visiting Uruguay, a strategic partner with whom Germany shares principles and values.

The German foreign minister added that the strategic partnership with Uruguay is valued by Berlin.
