OAS Electoral Observation Mission visits Peru

Lima, 30 September 2022 (TDI): The delegation of the Organization of American States (OAS) led by María Alejandra Pericola visited Peru. Maria Pericola was received by the Foreign Minister of Peru, Cesar Landa.

Maria Pericola is the head of the Observation Mission of the OAS that will be deployed. They will conduct the duties of election monitoring. The process of deployment will follow at regional and municipal levels.

The Foreign Minister of Peru, Landa assured the governmental support to the delegation. The Minister also added that such steps are important for the development of democracy in Peru as well as for enhancing transparency.

There will be an election of 13,032 members from the 196 provinces of the 25 regional divisions of Peru. The period of validation of this election will be from 2023 to 2026.

The delegation that will monitor and assist Peru in the elections consists of top diplomats in the region of Latin America.

There will be Maria Pericola along with the Deputy Head of this mission, Luisa Ferreira. Ferreira is also the director of OAS’s department for election cooperation.

The delegation also includes the Head of the OAS’s mission to Peru, Miguel Trinidad. The former Foreign Minister of Suriname, Niermala Badrising will also conduct the duties in the elections of Peru.

Cooperation with Peruvian Civil Society

The Electoral Observation Mission of the OAS met with the civil society agency’s President of “Transparencia Peru”, Adriana Urrutia. Adriana Urrutia assured support and assistance to the mission in the upcoming Peruvian elections.

The Head of the OAS’s mission also conducted a meeting with the President of JNE Peru. JNE Peru is an autonomous organization in Peru that guarantees justice and monitors the people’s right to vote in the Peruvian elections.

The President of JNE Peru, Jorge Luis Salas Arenas along with other members of the organization learned about the work of election monitoring from the delegation.
