NUST Team Won UNESCO Inter-University Competition

Islamabad, 28 September 2021 (TDI): The United States Embassy in Islamabad congratulated the National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) team on Monday for winning the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) inter-university competition. The competition revolved around developing a low-cost plastic waste recycling machine.

A team of five students and two faculty members, Dr. Salman Naqvi (supervisor) and Dr. Taqi Mehran (co-supervisor) from the NUST School of Chemical & Materials Engineering (SCME), took part in United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s inter-university contest to develop an inexpensive plastic waste recycling machine. The team put forward an effective solution and thus got selected by the Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF) selection committee.

The US Embassy Islamabad congratulated team NUST for winning the competition, besides enumerating that Pakistan’s scalable new technologies and nature-based solutions could lead to an uncontaminated and more resilient world. Meanwhile, the competition organizers, PSF, and UNESCO will be providing the NUST team with funds of 0.6 million PKR for developing the recycling machine’s prototype. The machine’s design is based on the idea of converting plastic waste into bricks; The concept of plastic melting and densifying it to produce bricks will soon be introduced in the market for commercial purposes.
