Rawalpindi, 5 April 2022 (TDI): Tapas Adhikari, the Nepalese Ambassador to Pakistan met General Qamar Javed Bajwa, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of Pakistan. The meeting took place at the General Head Quarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi today.
The two officials discussed matters pertaining to mutual interest, regional security situation as well as measures to improve bilateral relations between Pakistan and Nepal during the meeting.
General Qamar Javed Bajwa on his part stated that Pakistan desires to enhance long-term multi-faceted ties with Nepal based on shared interests. He emphasized that all regional states ought to work jointly for lasting regional peace and stability.
Whilst Ambassador Tapas Adhikari on his part lauded the efforts of Pakistan for regional stability. Moreover, he pledged to play his part in further advancement in diplomatic collaboration with Pakistan in all domains.
Nepal-Pakistan ties
Nepal and Pakistan established diplomatic ties in 1960. Both countries marked the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties in 2019.
Nepal opened up a residential Embassy in Islamabad in 1962 while the Honorary Nepali Consulate General in Karachi was established in 1975.
A Nepal-Pakistan Joint Economic Commission (JEC) was set up in 1983 to boost economic collaboration between the two partners. JEC makes efforts to collaborate in the areas of investment, trade, and industrial joint ventures.
Aside from that, Pakistani investment has been made in joint ventures pertaining to Nepal’s hotels, textile, and banking enterprises. The two governments also signed a trade agreement in July 1982 to boost bilateral trade.
A Joint Business Council (JBC) has also been established in 1996 between the Nepalese and Pakistan chambers of Commerce. Likewise, the Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) also signed MOUs with Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore Chambers of Commerce.
Furthermore, Nepal and Pakistan also collaborate in the domains of culture and education. Many Nepalese students come to Pakistan to pursue higher education.
