Washington, 24 December 2021 (TDI): The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously adopted a United States resolution to provide urgent assistance to Afghanistan amid the current situation of catastrophe.

ABOUT THE UNITED NATIONS RESOLUTION

The UNSC resolution has been adopted on Wednesday, 22 December 2021 by 15 member states and presented by United Nations.

The resolution aims at providing financial, economic, healthcare and food assistance and timely delivery to Afghan masses to combat the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. It also noted that support to such initiatives in Afghanistan will be taken without violating United Nations (UN) sanctions imposed on entities linked to the Taliban.

The US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) issued three licenses for the smooth flow of assistance to Afghan people. The licenses has emphasized on the existing authorities to make timely and urgent assistance to Afghanistan along with other basic human needs and required support to Afghan people.

The State Department stated that the UNSC resolution which is adopted by the 15 members of the UNSC, drafted by the US emphasized to ensure needed aid to Afghan people on urgent grounds and must not divert its pathways leading towards the Taliban.

The Department further added that the UN sanctions are an effective channel to shave off the threats from the Afghan soil and to combat the jaws of abuses ongoing in Afghanistan but this must not obstruct the smooth flow of aid to Afghan people.

MUNIR AKRAM’S VIEWS ABOUT THE RESOLUTION

At a briefing in New York, Pakistan’s Permanent UN Ambassador, Munir Akram, stated that the UN resolution has made it clear that the provision of basic humanitarian needs to Afghan people is not violating the already imposed sanctions on the Taliban.

The ambassador highlighted Pakistan’s stance on the resolution and said that Pakistan highly appreciates and supports the resolution.

He further said that the resolution has paved the ways for smooth flow of financial economic support and assistance to prevent Afghanistan from the verge of collapse. He highlighted that the resolution could prevent chaos in Afghanistan without benefitting Taliban.

Munir Akram said that with the adoption of the UN resolution, Afghan people now look at international community to pass more resolutions that can meet the eyes. He emphasized international NGOs, UN agencies, regional stakeholders and international players to come forward for assistance without being concerned without legal impediment.

China’s UN Ambassador Zhang Jun tweeted that Afghanistan must receive assistance without any intervention. He also stated that all conditions which are artificially developed cannot be accepted, and thanked the US for presenting a resolution for Afghanistan.

The Taliban spokesperson, Zabihullah Mujahid,  also supported and welcomed the UNSC resolution. He said that Afghanistan looks towards international community for a stable and peaceful Afghanistan. He further said that Afghanistan needs global support to heal the developed cracks on economic and social sheets.
