Uzbek President Mirziyoyev Steals the Spotlight on US Visit

Tashkent (TDI): Uzbekistan took center stage at this year’s United Nations General Assembly in New York, with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev securing both political visibility and major business wins.

His high-profile meeting with US President Donald Trump was capped by the signing of an $8 billion agreement with Boeing for the purchase of Dreamliner aircraft, an announcement that drew applause from Trump and caught the eye of global business circles.

Trump praised the deal on social media, describing Mirziyoyev as “a man of his word” and highlighting that the agreement would generate more than 35,000 American jobs.

Beyond the Boeing announcement, Mirziyoyev participated in an investment roundtable that brought together senior executives from top U.S. companies and financial institutions.

Bilateral trade has expanded fourfold since Mirziyoyev took office, with over 300 American firms now active in Uzbekistan. Talks during the visit spotlighted strategic sectors such as rare-earth elements and critical minerals. One notable meeting was with the vice president of the Colorado School of Mines, who voiced support for creating a research hub in Uzbekistan.

Other discussions covered banking, IT, transportation, and energy infrastructure. The Boeing contract, however, stood out as the symbolic centerpiece, signaling Uzbekistan’s ambition to be a bridge between Central Asia and Western markets, The Times of Central Asia reported.

Analysts note that this approach reflects a broader strategy: diversifying away from reliance on Russia and China by building stronger ties with the United States and Europe.

The Trump administration, for its part, has been seeking to expand its footprint in Central Asia, with projects such as the so-called “Trump Corridor” (also referred to as the Zangezur Corridor), designed to connect the region to global trade routes without passing through Russian territory.

For Mirziyoyev, the optics of a personal endorsement from Trump carry weight at home, projecting diplomatic credibility and underscoring Uzbekistan’s emergence as a more independent and proactive global player.

By combining headline-grabbing commercial deals with ongoing reforms at home, Uzbekistan is making a calculated bet: that modernization, economic diversification, and deeper engagement with the West will secure long-term growth and strategic relevance.
