Islamabad (TDI): Taking notice of farmers’ complaints, Federal Minister for Industries and Production Rana Tanveer Hussain on Saturday directed the Sugar Commissioner to present a report on sugarcane prices in the next meeting.
He issued instruction for taking steps to protect farmers’ rights during a meeting of the Sugar Advisory Board chaired by him here.
Rana Tanveer Hussain emphasized that the exploitation of farmers will not be tolerated and stressed that sugar mill owners must pay the fair price of sugarcane to farmers.
In a meeting in November, the minister said that all payments to farmers will be made before the start of the crushing season.
He had warned that if mills do not pay the dues to farmers, their export licenses will be revoked.
The board reviewed the estimates for the sugarcane crop and the overall stock position of sugar for the upcoming crushing season.
The board expressed satisfaction with the current sugar prices in the local market.

Minister highlights key achievement
Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said the timely commencement of the sugar crushing season is a significant achievement.
Earlier, It was decided that all sugar mills will begin crushing from November 21, and action will be taken against mills that fail to start crushing by the 21st.
The last month’s meeting of the Sugar Advisory Board had reviewed the overall situation of sugar stocks across the country.

The fresh meeting was held to review implantation of the decisions agreed in the previous meeting and to address any new issue if arises.
The meeting was satisfied from the overall performance of the sector, however, issues pertaining to the farmers’ reservations was focused in the meeting.
