Minister Garneau held telephonic contact with Ethiopian counterpart

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, Marc Garneau held a telephonic contact with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen. Minister Garneau urged Minister Mekonnen to stimulate the access for humanitarian assistance to Tigray while expressing his concerns about the critical humanitarian crisis there.

He urged the government forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front to put a stop to military actions in the region. While noting the vulnerability of civilians and civilian infrastructure, he signified the urgent need of stopping the targeted attacks on them. He further called for an immediate withdrawal from the Eritrean forces. He reiterated the importance of political dialogue in the path of sustainable peace and stability. While doing so, he implored that the Government of Ethiopia should engage with political parties of all levels to end this crisis, politically.
