Mexico, Russia celebrate 132 years of diplomatic ties

Mexico City, 12 December 2022 (TDI): Mexico and Russia celebrated the 132nd anniversary of diplomatic relations on Sunday. The countries officially establish bilateral ties in 1890.

To celebrate 132 years, the officials of both countries took to Twitter to commemorate the event. The Ambassador of Mexico in Russia, Eduardo Villegas Megías shared a congratulatory message to mark the event.

The Ambassador twitted, “Diplomatic relations between Mexico and Russia began 132 years ago. It’s been a long time. In so many years we have learned the value of always keeping communication channels open.”

The anniversary is evidence of the solid friendship between the two nations. It marks the significance of the joint work done by both countries to strengthen the bilateral relationship.

Mexico, Russia bilateral relations

Mexico and Russia formally established diplomatic relations on 1 December 1890 in Mexico City. In 1891 the first Russian Consulate opened in the Mexican capital.

However, from 1910 to 1917 the relations were practically non-existent owing to the revolutions in both countries. When Russia became the part of Soviet Union in 1922, Mexico became the first country in the Americas to establish relations with it.

After the ending of the Soviet Union in 1991, Mexico continued to maintain diplomatic relations with the new Russian Federation as its successor state.

Since then, bilateral relations between the two nations have steadily increased. Mexico has an Embassy in Moscow. Likewise, Russia has an Embassy in Mexico City.

Mexico has purchased various military equipment from Russia. Both nations have signed several bilateral agreements. The agreements encompass various fields including culture, economics, nuclear weapons, peace, and security among others.

Mexico is Russia’s third biggest trading partner in Latin America. Russian multinational companies are operating in Mexico. Similarly, Mexican multinational companies operate in Russia.

It is pertinent to note that the development of closer bilateral cooperation is facilitated by the similarity of the positions of countries on certain matters.
