Seoul, 28 January 2022 (TDI): Mexico and South Korea celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between both, on January 26. Presidents Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Moon Jae-In congratulated each other on the occasion of the anniversary.

President Lopez Obrador wrote a letter to his counterpart Moon Jae-In; on the commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between them.

Indeed, Mexico and South Korea’s diplomatic relations started on January 26, 1962. According to Obrador, throughout six decades of institutional relations, both countries forged a constructive relationship based on close bonds that unite them.

Those bonds are in the political, economic, and cooperation spheres. One example is the Strategic Association for Mutual Prosperity, which both countries agreed in 2005. Obrador then noted that the enhanced cooperation between the two countries can be seen in the bilateral and multilateral arena.

 

During these 60 years, both worked in different areas such as student exchanges, cultural expressions, tourism, scientific cooperation, and more. In addition to that high-level dialogues have been part of their collaboration.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, the cooperation between the two is still relevant, and search how both can reach common goals in the future.

Both states are bridges between two different worlds, Latin America and Asia. Moreover, Korea is Mexico’s fourth-largest trading partner, the 2nd in inversions coming from Asia, the third supplier, and the fifth buyer of Mexican products. On the other side, Mexico was the first trading partner of South Korea.

Diplomatic Representation

The two of them have representatives in the other country. For instance, Mexico has its embassy in Seoul, and the Republic of South Korea embassy is in Mexico City.

In the Multilateral Area

In the Multilateral arena, Both states interact through international and regional organizations. For instance, the United Nations, G20, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), a partnership between Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey and Australia (MIKTA), The World Bank, and more.

To conclude, according to a Korean tradition, the number 60 represents the end of a zodiacal cycle. So, both governments have the commitment to make this new zodiac cycle prosperous and solid for the ongoing years.
