President of Lebanon meets UN Coordinator

Beirut, 28 January 2022 (TDI): The President of Lebanon, Michel Aoun, met with the United Nations Special Coordinator in Lebanon Ambassador Joanna Wronecka.

During his meeting with the UN Special Coordinator, the President of Lebanon declared that Lebanon condemns any aggression against “the UN Interim Force in Lebanon”. He said the government condemns the recent attack on UNIFIL.

President has said that investigations are on the way and emphasize the importance of coordination between the Lebanese Armed Forces and UNIFIL.

President of Lebanon stressed the importance of coordination between the army and UNIFIL to avoid the recurrence of such incidents.

During the meeting, both sides discussed the current situation and recent political developments.

In this regard, President Aoun reaffirmed Lebanon’s readiness to resume negotiations to demarcate the southern maritime borders. 

Additionally, he pointed out that the resumption of cabinet sessions restores the work of the executive authority to normal. This all comes according to the powers specified for it in the constitution.

Attack on the UNIFIL Forces

The high-level meeting was in response to the recent violent attacks on the UNIFIL troops that have been injured.

According to the spokesperson of the UNIFIL in Lebanon peacekeepers during their routine petrol were attacked and intercepted. The ambush caused one soldier wounded. The attackers also damaged the two vehicles and stole items.

This is the second such attack in a span of a few weeks. The UN Peacekeeping troops were targeted in the border village of Chakra and Bint Jbeil village.

Ambassador Wornecka conveyed to President Aoun the position of the United Nations on developments in Lebanon. She noted that the Security Council will hold a session next March in Lebanon.
