July 18th, 2021- (TDI): A meeting took place between the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, Mr. Motegi Toshimitsu, and the Minister for Trade, Tourism, and Investment of the Commonwealth of Australia, Mr. Hon. Dan Tehan MP, on the 15th of July. This meeting, which lasted for approximately a half-hour, was arranged on account of Mr.
Hon. Dan’s visit to Japan. The two ministers reiterated Japan and Australia’s relationship as ‘Special Strategic Partners’ that share similar fundamental values as well as strategic interests. Since they consider each other like-minded countries, they plan to work towards promoting a ‘Free and Open Indo Pacific’.
In addition, they agreed to work on the advancement of multilateral trade systems such as WTO and TPP11.
Towards the end of their discussion, they hinted towards increased cooperation between the two states in multiple areas, such as that of digital trade and OECD.
