‘Tonight We Made History’ Mamdani Declares Victory in Mayoral Election

New York (TDI): Zohran Mamdani, a 33 years old democratic socialist and state lawmaker declared his victory in New York City’s Democratic mayoral election after defeating the ex New York Governor Andrew Cuomo during the first round of voting.

On Wednesday Morning, Mamdani tweeted “In the words of Nelson Mandela: it always seems impossible until it’s done. My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it. I am honored to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City.”

According to The New York Times The initial results that came out reveal Mamdani secured 43.5 percent of votes to Cuomo’s 36.4 percent with major wins across the New York boroughs of Queens, Brooklyn, and much of Manhattan, while Cuomo took the Bronx and Staten Island.

New York’s primary voting procedure lets voters rank their five top candidates, so voters’ non-first-choice picks still need to be counted in the coming days.

In his victory speech on Wednesday morning, he told his supporters “Tonight we made history” “A life of dignity should not be reserved for a fortunate few,” Mr. Mamdani said. “It should be one that the city government guarantees for each and every New Yorker.”

“Tonight was not our night, tonight was Mamdani’s night and he put together  a great campaign and he touched New York people and inspired them and moved them and got them to come out and vote and he really ran a highly compatible campaign” Andrew Cuomo stated in his speech after his defeat.

Mamdani was born in Uganda to Indian parents and later moved to the United States at a very young age. His mother is the award winning film director Mira Nair meanwhile his father is a professor at Columbia University.

If elected this November, Mamdani will be the first New York’s Muslim mayor and the youngest symbolizing a generational and ideological shift in the city’s politics.
