Malaysia, New Zealand Call for Ceasefire in Gaza

-

Kuala Lumpur, 2 September 2024 (TDI): Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and New Zealand Prime Minister Chris Luxon have jointly called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the pursuit of a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.

Speaking at a joint press conference on Monday, Luxon emphasized their shared stance: “We both are very united in calling for an immediate ceasefire, getting the parties around the negotiating table, and finding a two-state solution.”

Anwar expressed concern over the current prospects for a ceasefire, noting a lack of commitment from key countries, particularly the United States, to exert their influence to halt the conflict.

“The only hope is to engage the United States to take a stronger stance,” he added.

Malaysia’s Support for Palestine

Malaysia, a predominantly Muslim nation, is a staunch supporter of the Palestinian cause and has long advocated for a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Anwar maintains good relations with the political leadership of the Palestinian group Hamas but asserts that he has no involvement with its military wing.

During his 3-day trip to Malaysia, Luxon also announced that New Zealand would enhance its defense cooperation with Malaysia.

As part of this effort, New Zealand is deploying one of its air force’s P8 Poseidon patrol and reconnaissance aircraft to Butterworth in Malaysia’s northern Penang state for a joint exercise.
