Kuala Lumpur, 01 February 2022 (TDI): Federal Territory Day is a state holiday in Malaysia. This important day is celebrated on 1st February of every year in Kuala Lumpur.

Federal Territory Day is commonly known as the Hari Wilayah Persekutuan or simply as Hari Wilayah, which commemorates the formation of the Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory on 1 February 1974, ceded by the state of Selangor to the federal government of Malaysia.

Every February 1, Federal Territory Day is observed as a regional public holiday in federal territories like Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya. If the day falls on a weekend, the following Monday is celebrated as a holiday, and if the holiday conflicts with Chinese New Year, it changes.

History of the Day

Malaysia took on its modern form in 1963 when the former British colony of Singapore and the East Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak joined the Federation of Malaya. When the Federal Territory Agreement was signed on 28 January 1974, after four days The Federal Territory Day was introduced on 1 February 1974 as Malaysia Day.

Labuan became Malaysia’s second federal territory on April 16, 1984, and Putrajaya became the country’s third federal territory on February 1, 2001. Furthermore, 1st of February is also significant as the anniversary of the creation of the Federation of Malaya in 1948.

Celebrations on Federal Territory Day

The day is widely observed by arranging colorful parades, concerts, and several stage shows. Every year, the host of the events holds a number of contests at the assigned sites. The events begin at lunchtime, with a bang with pyrotechnics. Sports, fishing tournaments, and other activities are hosted in Lake Perdana and Titiwangsa Lake and many other locations.

Malaysian PM Wishes Federal Territory Day 2022

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob wished Happy Federal Territory Day to the Malaysian people on the 1st of February of this year.

He stated that Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, and Labuan are not only symbols of the success for Malaysia, but also the attractive and diverse locations that attract tourists from all over the world.

Further declaring the 1st of February 2022 50th anniversary, he stated that Kuala Lumpur is crowned as Malaysia’s first city. “Enliven the love and affection of Malaysian families in the Federal Territory and throughout the country as we go forward as a developed and successful nation”.
