New York, 23 September 2021 (TDI): On Thursday, USA Ambassador to UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield welcomed the Interim Foreign Minister of Mali Abdoulaye Diop to the 76th UN General Assembly. In the meeting, both parties discussed the partnership between the United States and Mali. The United States welcomed mutual support in democracy and the fight against terrorism.
Mali is in an 18-month transition period before establishing its presidential and legislative elections in February 2022. Mali has experienced 4 military coups last year. The transition government is committed to the smooth holding of the electoral process and transfer of power to a new democratic government.
The United States established diplomatic relations with Mali in 1960, following its independence from France. USA-Mali relations have been maintained strong for decades based on shared goals of improving stability and reducing poverty through economic growth. The United States is committed to international efforts to help Mali restore peace and stability throughout its territory.
