Paris, 12 November 2022 (TDI): At Paris Peace Forum, support has been expressed by the participating states to revamp the peace process between Venezuelans.

The President of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, the President of France Emmanuel Macron, and the President of Colombia, Gustavo Petro expressed their support for the resumption of the negotiation process, within the framework of the Paris Peace Forum.

The leaders met with the negotiators of both parties, Jorge Rodríguez and Gerardo Blyde to re-launch the negotiations.

The negotiations between the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the Unitary Platform of the Venezuelan opposition, began in August 2021 in Mexico when both parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding.

From October 2021, the negotiations are at a halt. At Paris Peace Forum, the relaunch of the negotiations is encouraged as it is the only way to resolve a crisis in the country.

The aim of the meeting between the leaders is to encourage the political actors in Venezuela to solve the crisis in the state as it is affecting millions of people. Moreover, they have also offered support for the peace process.

Free, democratic presidential elections with the international observance in 2024 in Venezuela, are suggested as the way out of the political instability.

Crisis in Venezuela

The crisis in the country is socioeconomic and political. It began under the presidency of Hugo Chavez and worsened under Nicolas Maduro’s presidency.

There is a discomfort in the state since the 2015 elections. In the 2015 parliamentary elections, the majority of the opposition was elected to the National Assembly.

After this, the outgoing National Assembly consisting of Bolivarian officials filed a case in the highest court of the state with the help of Maduro’s allies.

In 2017, the country was lured into a constitutional crisis after the National Assembly was disavowed by Maduro. The political crisis since then prevails.
