Seoul, 10 November 2021 (TDI): The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea is holding a Korea-Pacific Alliance Green Economy Forum, today. The theme of the Forum is “Expanding Partnership in Green Growth and Renovation between Korea and the Pacific Alliance in a Post COVID-19 World”. The venue of the Forum is the Lotte Hotel in Seoul.
The Pacific Alliance (PA)
Colombia, Chile, Mexico, and Peru; the four countries of the Pacific Alliance (PA) are participating in the Forum. Ecuador is also attending; as it seeks to join the PA as an associate member. The forum will be conducted in a hybrid online and offline format.
Agenda of the Forum
Korea-PA Green Economy Policy Trends, Korea-PA Cooperation on Circular Economy and Forests, and Korea-PA Cooperation on Energy Transition and Hydrogen Economy are on the agenda to be discussed. Meetings will also be held between the officials of the two sides; on the sidelines of the forum.
Korea-Pacific Alliance Green Economy Forum
The two sides will deliberate upon the value of extensive green recovery to overcome climate change. Policies and measures for cooperation to enable economic rehabilitation in the post-pandemic world; are also part of the discussion.
Sustainable Future
The PA countries and Korea are keen to build a sustainable future by participating in the relevant efforts of the international community. The partners aim to attain carbon neutrality by 2050. PA member states are at the forefront to boost green economy policies by advocating hydrogen economy, energy transition, and clean growth. They are Korea’s closest allies in executing its Green New Deal.
The Forum will commence with the inaugural address of the Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chung Eui-yong. Vice-President of Colombia, Marta Ramírez all also delivers a keynote speech.
Reinforcement of Ties with Latin America
The Korean government has initiated progressive efforts to reinforce ties with Latin America by holding many summits this year. They include a Korea-Central American Integration System Summit, Korea-LAC Digital Cooperation Forum, and a Korea-Central America Special Roundtable. Korea aims to advance substantive collaboration in the fields of green economy and green recovery via this forum.
Trade Coalition
The PA is a significant trade coalition in Latin America. It has a population of 230 million. The collective GDP of the PA countries is equal to 2 trillion dollars. It accounts for approximately 60% of the trade between Korea and Latin America. Korea joined the PA as an observer in 2013. Since then it has made a constant effort to become the alliance’s associate member.

Vice-President and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia Marta Ramírez, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador César Montaño, Minister of Energy of Chile Juan Carlos Jobet are attending the forum in person. Vice-Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy of Ecuador Gabriel Argüello, and Deputy Director-General of the National Planning Department (DNP) of Colombia Daniel Gómez Gaviria will also personally attend it.
