Islamabad, 18 November 2022 (TDI): The Embassy of the Republic of Korea (ROK/South Korea) in Islamabad organized a ceremony on Thursday during which the Korean government announced financial aid to Afghan Refugees in Pakistan to help in the fields of health and gender-based violence services.
The government donated 1.5 million dollars in this regard to three United Nations Agencies working in Pakistan.

The Ambassador of Korea, Suh Sangpyo signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Luay Shabaneh, the Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
In this vein, he also signed MoU with Palitha Mahipala, the Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), and Rathi PalaKrishnan, Deputy Representative of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP).
Each agency received half a million dollars to provide food assistance, health care, and Gender-based Violence services (GBV) to Afghan Refugees.
The Representatives of UN agencies, while speaking at the ceremony, thanked the Ambassador, the government of Korea, and the Korean people. They declared this donation humanitarian aid to the sufferings of Afghan Refugees.
Korea’s continuous humanitarian aid for Afghan Refugees
The Korean government and UN agencies are working hand-in-hand and making joint efforts to empower Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Throughout the years, Korea has provided millions of dollars for the cause.
In 2020, the Korean government provided 1 million dollars to UNHCR. The aid was used to facilitate 100,000 Afghan refugees by providing livelihood assistance and community-based protection.
Moreover, in 2021, the South Korean government announced it to provide Afghanistan with US$32 million worth of humanitarian aid. It also pledged to support food & health care services for Afghan refugees in the neighboring countries, including Iran & Pakistan.

Additionally, in March 2021, a triplicate Acknowledgment Certificate was signed between Pakistan, Korea, and UNHCR. Owing to this, Korea provided six hundred thousand (600,000) medical Masks.
This was a donation from the Korean side for distribution among Afghan refugees and host communities across Pakistan. It is pertinent to mention here that the government of Korea is passionate about helping the Afghan community.
It has provided a home to some 400 Afghan refugees that fled from their homeland after the Taliban takeover.
