Earthquake in Sichuan

An earthquake of magnitude 6.8 struck China’s Sichuan province, killing more than 40 people and shaking the capital Chengdu. The earthquake struck at 13:00 local time (05:00 GMT) on September 5 in Sichuan province at a depth of 10km (6 miles). The epicenter of the earthquake was Luding.

The quake was so strong in Luding and it was hard for some people to remain standing. This was Sichuan’s biggest earthquake since August 2017, when one of magnitude 7.0 hit Aba prefecture.

The most powerful earthquake in Sichuan was recorded in May 2008 when a magnitude 8.0 earthquake centered in Wenchuan killed nearly 70,000 people and caused extensive damage.

Earthquakes are common in the Sichuan province of China, especially in its mountains in the west, a tectonically active area along the eastern boundary of the Qinghai-Tibetan plateau.

Sichuan province has activated the highest level of emergency response for the earthquake. The President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping, has ordered all-out rescue efforts after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake.
