Astana (TDI): Kazakhstan has announced that a constitutional referendum will be held on March 15, as President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev pushes for what he calls “a complete reboot” of the country’s governance system.
The move aims to modernize government structures and increase institutional accountability.
The official notice, published on the presidential website on Wednesday, states that the draft of the new constitution will be released to the public on Thursday.
The question posed to voters will be: “Do you accept the new Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the draft of which was published in the mass media on February 12, 2026?” The Central Election Commission will oversee the referendum process.

The proposed constitution introduces several significant changes. It would replace the current bicameral parliament with a single-chamber legislature and create the position of vice president.
According to President Tokayev, these amendments aim to redistribute powers, strengthen the system of checks and balances, and enhance the effectiveness and resilience of political institutions.

Analysts see the reforms as a move away from personality-driven governance toward a more institutionalized system capable of managing leadership transitions and increasing stakeholder participation.
