On 30 August, Kazakhstan celebrates the adoption of the nation’s current constitution, which was the second one passed by Kazakhstan after the collapse of the USSR. If Constitution day falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is considered a holiday.
History of Constitution day
Kazakhstan adopted the constitutional law on the Constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan in December 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
A second constitution was created which set out the fundamental law of the country and established the principles of an independent, secular and democratic Kazakhstan in the year 1995.
This second constitution was adopted on 30 August 1995 following approval via a national referendum. In that national referendum, more than eight million people took part.
The adoption of the second constitution is considered as a key event in the modern history of Kazakhstan. It is also a contributing factor in the country’s political stability and economic growth.
This was an act an act which proved to be a turning point on the road to establishing Kazakhstan as an independent nation.
The Kazakhstan constitution has been amended twice since 1995, once in 1998 and again in 2007, at which time a new form of state system – presidential parliamentary – was outlined in the document.
This national holiday reflects the Kazakhstan population’s determination to establish the country as a democratic, secular, constitutional and social state thus acts as one of the most significant days in the history of Kazakhstan.
How Constitution day is celebrated?
There are many festivities, concerts and exhibitions are held in every region and city of the republic on the Constitution day.
Parades and games are held in the rural and mountain regions of Kazakhstan while the most official events are held in the country’s capital, Nur-Sultan. The fireworks are also displayed in the evening.
