Islamabad, 27 May 2022 (TDI): Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz sharif visited The Karot hydropower project on Wednesday, May 25.
Addressing the workers and engineers Prime Minister said that the Karot hydropower project is expected to produce environmentally friendly, low-cost electricity.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif stated that the Karot Hydropower Project is a significant pilot project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Prime Minister added that It will create environmentally benign and affordable electricity and boost green growth in Pakistan.
The Prime Minister said the foundations of the project were laid back in 2015 and it is part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project, which lies at the junction of Punjab and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
“Hydroelectricity is considerably more cost-effective, it’s also a clean method of power generation,” he remarked during his visit to the hydropower project’s engineers and workers.
Major features of the Karot hydropower project
Once operational, the Karot hydropower project is planned to create 3.2 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity per year, saving 3.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year and covering the power needs of the local population of roughly 5 million people.
According to the prime minister, the project will be operational soon and will play a good role in the country’s economy by providing 720 megawatts of clean energy.
Prime Minister also stated that Chinese and Pakistani workers are working together to ensure the project’s early completion.
“The project would assist Pakistan in moving forward in further strengthening Pakistan-China relations,” Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said.
The China Three Gorges Corporation has invested in the Karot hydropower project in Pakistan’s eastern Punjab province, which is the fourth level of the Jhelum River’s five cascade hydropower plants.
Expressing his gratitude to the Chinese company for this project, Sharif said this project will not only provide clean and cheap energy that has no environmental hazards but will also help Pakistan save four billion rupees.
Lastly, the Prime Minister said that the project will help us in moving forward to strengthen the Pakistan-China friendship.
