Beirut, 20 September 2021 (TDI): The fifth edition of the Karama – Beirut Human Rights Film Festival (HRFF) will commence on 23 September 2021 in Beirut. Art factory 961 organized the festival with the theme of Occupy the Void.
It took place in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre in Beirut. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Foundation, the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Lebanon, and the “Taawon” NGO will also be supporting the festival.
The focus of this year’s edition will be on the strength of youth, their ambition for political and social transformation, and respect for human rights. In addition to that, it will focus on freedom from discrimination in civil society.
About Karama – Beirut Festival
The Karama – Beirut Festival is a festival that promotes denunciation of racism. It further promotes the advocation of human rights through films. It will be running from 23 to 26 September this year.
Karama HRFF contributes to providing a Human Rights Cinema that condemns hatred discourse, racism, injustice, and discrimination. The aim of the festival is to rally solidarity and support for minorities.
In this regard, the festival screens an assortment of films from around the globe to organize open dialogues. The dialogues aim to shed light on human rights violations across the world along with the prospects of social progress and change.
Films are shortlisted for the festival with the intent of engaging and informing people about human rights issues. It highlights issues pertaining to asylum, immigration, censorship and repression, child abuse and exploitation, eviction, as well as death penalties and poverty.
In addition, it spotlights issues like war and conflicts, Palestine-Israel conflict, social exclusion, workers and unemployed rights, social care, mental health, HIV/AIDS, youth and women’s rights along with gender issues, minorities cultures, human trafficking, freedom of expression and the media as well as environmental exploitation.
Furthermore, citizens’ political participation, imprisonment, torture, transparency, democracy-building, democracy, civil rights, and civil rights under occupation are also brought to the fore.
